Structural
The frame is structurally reconditioned to create a stable base. Corners are
reglued and braced with a metal bracket or wood spline.
|
Stabilization
Areas with flaking plaster or gesso are stabilized with
adhesive along the flake
edges. Cracks receive a thinned adhesive solution that seeps into the crack.
|
Rebuilding
Plaster or "gesso" areas are rebuilt to the original shape. The base has to be stable
before repairs to the ornaments can begin.
|
Casting
Missing ornaments are molded, cast and fit into place. An ornament will be
created if there are none matching on the frame.
|
Detailing
Fine detailing is done to the rebuilt and recast areas. A color coat is laid
over the area and then re-checked for additional refining and blending into
the surroundings.
|
Leafing
The surface is prepared with an assortment of paints, gesso, and clays
depending on the finish and leaf being applied.
|
Antiquing
The leafed area is the colored and toned to match the original leaf. Protein
based colorants are applied to match the patina.
|
Fitting
For oil paintings, the rabbet is lined with felt. Paintings are backed with
a protective coroplast covering and then a secure hanging system is
installed.
